A switchboard just failed inspection: the next 30 days

What the owner is about to be quoted, the three questions to ask before anyone accepts a 40-week lead time, and the path that delivers an assembled replacement in 6-10 weeks.

Week 1: the report

The report says end-of-life, arc damage, or a breaker that will not reset. The owner asks for a replacement quote. The first quote is from the incumbent manufacturer and it says 30-50 weeks. That number is normal this year (the board shows why) and it is not the only option.

Three questions before accepting it

1. Is the quote for a factory-built board, or an assembled board from the same components through a UL 891 shop?
2. Are the breakers the spec calls for available now from distribution? Usually yes.
3. What is the delivery date in writing, and what happens if it moves?

The assembled path

Assembled UL 891 switchboards and motor control centers, same Eaton, Schneider and ABB breakers, through certified panel shops, in 6-10 weeks, with the date in the contract. Send the report and the nameplate photo and a number comes back inside a week.
Send the nameplate and the quote. A number comes back inside a week.
